The 60's give off such nostalgic and vintage vibes. During the 1960's cakes were made to be extravagant and huge-the bigger the better. This trend was inspired by celebrities such as Elvis, who celebrated their weddings with massive cakes, over 6 tiers tall with pillars in between. The colours of these cakes is what made them special in my opinion; unlike other decades such as the 80's and 90's bright colours were not in style. In this decade pastel shades of pink, blue, green, and yellow were all common colours used to decorate cakes. In addition, cakes during this time period featured exquisite buttercream details. Wedding cakes often were covered in piped roses, and were topped off with an elaborate wedding topper, featuring the newlyweds. Also in this decade people began to opt for more exciting cake flavours such as lemon, pink chiffon, German chocolate, and toffee/caramel cake. Overall, cakes trends of this decade were heavily influenced by a population recovering from the war, and wanting to get back to an extravagant and comfortable lifestyle.

For my 1960's cake, I wanted to create two tiers of a typical 60's wedding cake; inspired directly from a real wedding cake from this time period. The flavour of this cake was lemon, and it had a raspberry compote filling. The recipe I used for this cake is linked here:

This recipe produced a delicious and moist cake, however the layers were not as thick as I would've liked and therefore I would recommend doubling this recipe. To decorate this cake I only used two tips 4b tip and a Wilton 104 tip to pipe the roses. Piping the roses was a really cool experience as I've never done this before. They were actually quite easy to make, and I would definitely recommend trying it out if you're a baker as well!

Also, fun fact: This is the decade in which meringue buttercreams became popularized, due to the demand for more intricate details.
